On June 1, commencing at 6:55 p.m. for approximately 15 minutes, Ms. TAKAICHI Sanae, Prime Minister of Japan, held a summit telephone call with H.E. Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

* At the outset, Prime Minister TAKAICHI commended the fact that the two leaders are able to communicate again at a time when exchanges between the United States and Iran are entering an extremely critical phase. She reiterated Japan's consistent position that what matters most is that the de-escalation of the situation is achieved through dialogue, and expressed her strong hope that Iran will seize this opportunity, continue to show maximum flexibility and that a final agreement will be achieved as soon as possible.* Furthermore, touching upon the passage of another Japan-related vessel, Prime Minister TAKAICHI strongly requested that the free and safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz be realized as soon as possible for vessels of all countries including Japan and other Asian countries.* In response, President Pezeshkian explained Iran's views including the current status of the exchange between the U.S. and Iran as well as the future outlook.* The two leaders concurred on continuing close communication toward the early resolution of the situation.
