TOKYO, July 7 -- Ministry of the Environment issued the following news:
Outcomes of the Seventh Global Conference on Climate and SDG Synergies and the Ninth Session of the UNESCAP Committee on Environment and Development
1. The "Seventh Global Conference on Strengthening Synergies between the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development" (herein referred to as the "Strengthening Synergies Conference") and the Ninth Session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) Committee on Environment and Development (herein referred to as ESCAP-CED9) were held back-to-back from June 29 to July 3, 2026, in Bangkok, Thailand.
2. At the Strengthening Synergies Conference, the "Asia-Pacific Synergies Report," developed with support from the Ministry of the Environment of Japan, was launched, its findings were presented and discussions were held on implementing synergies going forward.
3. At ESCAP-CED9, a "Ministerial Declaration on Environment and Development" and the "Regional Programme of Action on Advancing Synergies" were adopted.
(1) Strengthening Synergies Conference
Held June 29-30 under the theme: "Towards integrated implementation of climate action, environmental protection and sustainable development," lively discussions took place with participants from national governments and international organizations, experts, and others.
An event was held during the high-level segment to launch the "Asia-Pacific Synergies Report," which was developed with support from the Ministry of the Environment of Japan. In a video message, ISHIHARA Hirotaka, Minister of the Environment of Japan spoke about the importance of efforts to implement synergies and that the report would serve as a guide for these efforts.
DOI Kentaro, Vice-Minister for Global Environmental Affairs, Ministry of the Environment of Japan made opening remarks at a thematic roundtable and emphasized the need to make use of the report while fostering collaboration among diverse stakeholders and advancing solutions rooted in local contexts, in order to address multiple challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.

(2) ESCAP-CED9
Held July 1-3, lively discussions took place in the session aimed at addressing environmental and development issues in the Asia-Pacific region and strengthening regional cooperation.
Progress made on the 2022 Ministerial Declaration was reviewed, and a new "Ministerial Declaration on Environment and Development" along with the "Regional Programme of Action on Advancing Synergies" were adopted.*
In addition, Vice-Minister DOI spoke on behalf of Japan about the importance of promoting synergies through regional cooperation.
*This Regional Programme of Action was proposed by the Secretariat taking into account the resolutions on promoting synergies, which were proposed by Japan and adopted at the sixth and seventh sessions of the United Nations Environment Assembly. The new Ministerial Declaration and Regional Programme of Action build on findings of the "Asia-Pacific Synergies Report," which was launched the previous day.
