TOKYO, May 12 -- Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan issued the following news release:

On May 11, 2026, Mr. HORII Iwao, State Minister for Foreign Affairs, attended the Reception of Celebration of the World Portuguese Day at the 30th Anniversary of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) held at the official residence of the Ambassador of Portugal to Japan, and delivered his remarks on behalf of the Government of Japan.

In his remarks, State Minister HORII stated that he was pleased that May 5th was designated as "World Portuguese Day" in 2019 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), celebrating the importance and cultural diversity of Portuguese, a language spoken in a wide range of regions around the world, including Europe, South America, Africa, and Asia. In addition, State Minister HORII welcomed the CPLP on its 30th anniversary this year and stated that Japan, as an observer in the CPLP, will further strengthen cooperation with CPLP countries.
