IP5 offices have agreed on new AI-focused cooperation!
The five intellectual property offices (IP5) - EPO, JPO, MOIP, CNIPA and USPTO - held the 19th IP5 Heads of Office Meeting in Tokyo on June 12, 2026, hosted by the JPO.
At the meeting, the Offices reviewed progress over the past five years under the IP5 NET/AI Roadmap, originally endorsed as a roadmap for cooperation in the area of new emerging technologies (NET) and artificial intelligence (AI) at the 2021 IP5 Heads of Office Meeting. The IP5 Offices agreed on new directions for future cooperation and decided to establish a dedicated working group to advance practical discussions and initiatives.
Together with the other IP5 Offices, the JPO will continue to promote initiatives in the IP field!
Here is a recent update on WIPO GREEN!
WIPO GREEN is a platform established by WIPO in 2013 to promote the development and dissemination of environmental technologies.
The JPO and a number of Japanese companies are collaborating with WIPO GREEN as WIPO GREEN partners. As of June 2026, Japan has the largest number of WIPO GREEN partners in the world. The JPO has been supporting WIPO GREEN activities through the Funds-in-Trust Japan Industrial Property Global (FIT/Japan IP Global).
On June 5, 2026, WIPO GREEN Technology Forum 2026 was organized by the WIPO Japan Office with support from FIT/Japan IP Global. This online event aimed to promote international matchmaking of technologies that contribute to solving environmental challenges. Following an address by JPO Commissioner KASAI and other guest remarks, 18 Japanese companies and universities presented their pioneering environmental technologies to a global audience. We expect this event to accelerate the diffusion of environmental technologies and foster new international collaborations.
The JPO will continue to work to facilitate the spread of green technologies!
The JPO exhibited a booth at the INTA Annual Meeting!
From May 2 to 6, 2026, the 148th Annual Meeting of the International Trademark Association (INTA) was held in London, UK. Throughout the event, we operated a JPO booth under the theme of "File your TM with JPO to utilize your brands!". We introduced various types of non-traditional trademarks that can be protected in Japan, using examples of registered marks on our exhibition panels. More than 1,000 professionals visited our booth, and considerable interest was shown in Japan's trademark administration and practice.
Also, during the meeting, a workshop on the theme of "Comparison of Composite Marks in a Likelihood of Confusion Analysis" was held as part of the JPO-led TM5 project, featuring presentations by each of the TM5 offices.
The JPO will continue its efforts to develop an environment in which IP rights are properly protected and utilized!
Let me introduce some anti-counterfeiting initiatives by the JPO!
To strengthen efforts to combat counterfeit goods and raise public awareness of anti-counterfeiting measures both domestically and internationally, the JPO has been exchanging information with various organizations and businesses and collaborating through public-private partnerships such as the International Intellectual Property Protection Forum (IIPPF).
In March 2026, a new Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed among the IIPPF, the Agency for Domestic Market Surveillance and Development (DMS) of Vietnam, and Vietnam-based e-commerce platforms (Lazada, Shopee, Tiki, TikTok Shop), with Commissioner KASAI of the JPO acting as a witness. This MOU is expected to further strengthen measures against counterfeit goods on e-commerce platforms in Vietnam.
The JPO, together with the IIPPF will continue to strengthen cooperation with relevant organizations and e-commerce platforms to create an environment in which IP rights are properly protected!
The JPO and IPOS held a bilateral meeting!
On May 11, 2026, Commissioner KASAI of the JPO met in Singapore with Mr. Tan Kong Hwee, Chief Executive of the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS). As part of their new initiatives, they agreed to (1) hold regular meetings to exchange views on the use of AI in patent examination, and (2) launch a JPO-IPOS patent examiner exchange program. The two offices issued a joint statement on the agreement, building on the Memorandum of Cooperation signed in Tokyo in November 2025.
The JPO will continue to strengthen its collaboration with overseas IP offices in the field of IP!
